Retirement and Super
You're likely to spend 20 years or more in retirement. You've earned it, so plan to make it last.
Planning ahead
Plan for a long retirement
Retirement can feel a long way off, which makes it easy to put off planning. At 65, you can expect to live around another 20 years, and many people live much longer.
Planning now gives you the best chance of retiring when you choose, rather than working longer than you intended, and of making sure your money lasts as long as you do.
Accessing your super
When you can use your super
You can retire whenever you like, but there are rules about when you can access your super. Generally, you need to reach your preservation age before you can take it as a lump sum or turn it into a retirement income stream.
If you’d like to reduce your hours before retiring fully, a transition to retirement pension lets you draw an income from your super while you keep working. Lump sum withdrawals stay locked until you retire or turn 65.
The Age Pension
Qualifying for the Age Pension
To qualify you need to have reached Age Pension age, which is 67 for anyone born on or after 1 January 1957, and to meet the residency requirements.
Payments are then means tested using two tests: an income test and an assets test. Both are applied, and whichever gives you the lower payment is the one that counts.

Your position
How much super is enough?
That depends on the lifestyle you want in retirement, and it’s different for everyone. A few questions worth thinking about:
- Will you still have a mortgage to pay off?
- Are there children’s education costs ahead?
- What lifestyle do you want in retirement?
- Have you saved enough to sustain it?
- Can you afford to retire, or will you need to keep working?
In retirement
The bucket strategy
In retirement, preserving your capital is key. We split your money into three buckets, each with a different job.
Bucket one
Two years of pension payments, held ready to fund your income.
Bucket two
Medium-risk investments.
Bucket three
Long-term growth investments.
Pricing is one thing in investment markets we can control, so we look for good-quality, cost-effective structures and managers.
