Investing
For you and many other Australians, a secure financial future is a top priority.
Why it matters
Security brings choice
Financial security gives you choice, and choice lets you pursue your goals and ambitions, whatever they may be.
To find the right investments for you, we first need to understand your tolerance for risk and your investment horizon.
How it works
Asset allocation
Asset allocation is how your investments are spread across different types of assets. The main ones are:
Shares
A growth asset that can also provide income through dividends.
Property securities
Part-ownership of a listed property trust or company. Traded like shares, so values move with the market, with the potential for both growth and income.
Fixed interest and cash
You lend money to a company or government and receive regular interest, with your capital returned at the end of a set term.
Choosing a fund
Which fund is right for you?
Everyone’s needs are different and no single solution fits all. These four steps are a good place to start.
-
Clarify your risk profile
Would you rather have low-risk investments with returns just above inflation, or accept short-term ups and downs for potentially higher returns? Generally, the more risk you take on, the higher the potential return.
-
Set your objectives
Are you building wealth, looking for a regular income, or both? Income-focused investments tend to be more conservative, such as cash and fixed interest, while growth-focused ones invest more in Australian and international shares.
-
Tell us which industries to avoid
A conversation and a short form are all it takes: you tell us what you want no part of, and where you would rather your money went.
-
Choose your timeframe
Will you need the money within a year or two, or can you invest for five years or more? The longer your timeframe, the more risk you may be able to take on.
With these four answers, we can talk through which funds may suit you. Always read the Product Disclosure Statement before investing.
Managed funds
What is a managed fund?
A managed fund pools money from many investors, and a professional team invests it according to the fund’s objective, aiming for income, growth or both. You’re allocated units, which rise and fall in value with the fund’s assets.
Why consider one?
Diversification
Spreads your money across companies, industries, sectors and countries to reduce risk.
Compound returns
Reinvesting your earnings means small improvements in returns can make a big difference over time.
Invest regularly
Adding a set amount each month smooths out the impact of market ups and downs.
Income or growth
Returns can come as income distributions, as growth in the unit price, or both.
Low minimum investment
Access to asset classes such as property that would otherwise need large sums.
